Command Staff

The Sandwich Police Department is lead by (1) sworn Chief of Police and (3) sworn Patrol Sergeants. The police chief is appointed by the mayor of Sandwich. Patrolman are promoted to Sergeant after participating in written and oral testing. Participants who successfully pass both phases of testing are placed on a Sergeant eligibility list. It is from this list that the Sandwich Police Commission chooses the next Sergeant.




Patrol
Division

The Patrol Division has an authorized strength of (12) sworn patrolman. (2) patrolman are assigned as full time Detectives. The Patrol Division patrols the City of Sandwich in an effort to detect and prevent crime, assist citizens, assist other law enforcement agencies, participate in the schools, and enforces criminal and traffic law 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All patrolman are required to complete 480 hours instruction at the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. When officers return from the Police Academy the officer is assigned with several different members of the department for a 12 week field training program. Patrolman are sent to specialized training for DUI detection, Investigation Techniques, Breathalyzer Operations, and other classes based on availability. Sandwich Police Officers also participate in Multi-jurisdictional detective and gang meetings.






Communications
Division

The Sandwich Police Department maintains it's own communications center staffed by (4) full time and (1) part time civilian telecommunicators. Our dispatch center receives 9-1-1 calls from residents in the City of Sandwich as well as surrounding areas. Our telecommunicators are responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatching police units accordingly. Our telecommunicators are trained in LEADS and sent to specialized training classes yearly. All emergencies that warrant an ambulance and/or fire department response are transferred to Kencom in Yorkville, Illinois for immediate dispatch.


Records
Division

The Sandwich Police Department employs (2) civilian records personel who oversee information management within the police department. The Records Division will enter all information into our in-house computer system, prepare reports, communicates with surrounding State's Attorney's Offices, facilitates arrest records, prepares payroll and so much more. A great asset to the department, both records personel are also trained as telecommunicators and supplement the Communications Division when the need arise.
